I have been engaged in my vanity publishing project on WordPress for a little over a year now.
Happy Anniversary to me!
In truth it began as no more than a wish to understand blogging, coupled with a desire to place my words somewhere other than my notebook. So focused was I on these small goals that I never really gave a thought to the riches that might await me.
To my great joy, WordPress has provided me with a fascinating point of connection. From my safe sofa I can read the words of others, engage in compliment and conversation and enter alternative universes. ‘Following’ has become almost as exciting as being followed.
The pleasure of following is random and eclectic and you never really know where it will take you next. If you allow it, the journey is of course very personal. Mine has been one of global exploration and a few visits to Yorkshire. At various points I have enjoyed poetic conversation in the United States and been fascinated by goats on a Croatian island. I have picked up ideas about creative networking from Russia and I have been greeted on many days by images of life in Singapore. None of this existed for me a year ago.
As well as my geography, I have expanded my vocabulary, which now includes such delights as ‘paradelle’ and ‘anacampserote’. And it is by no means just about the words. Images have increased my awareness of beauty, from the artwork of Jan Toorop, through the youthful exuberance of young cartoonists to the photography of modern strangers.
My adventures in WordPress have both inspired me to stop and think and prompted me to take action. Through the beneficence of mathematical strigiformes I have even found myself properly ‘published’ on a poetry website.
Of course along with novelists I have encountered narcissists and nihilists. It has saddened me to discover so many creative folk are in battles with depression. Some have not blogged for a while and without knowing them I worry.
Others make me laugh, sometimes with their humour, sometimes with their insistent posting. If I manage a blog a week I have achieved a personal miracle. Those who publish daily, and at length, amaze in many ways.
So, as I have been here a year, I’m going to blow out my WordPress anniversary candle and make a wish. Or may be that should be make a resolution. Here’s to fearless following. May it take me to places I have never been before and may it bring you to me.
Don’t forget to make a wish. Happy Anniversary..
